Welcome to the Retiree Division
Welcome to the Retiree Division section of Local 1180's new website. More than just a drop-in center, the Retiree Division provides retirees of CWA Local 1180 with a venue to pursue their social, intellectual, and educational interests throughout their retirement. Through thoughtful and creative planning, the staff of the Retiree Division prepares a monthly calendar representing a compilation of some of the greatest activities in the area at any given moment. Broadway shows, trips, speakers, lunches, and interactive workshops allow retirees to socialize with peers, have fun, and learn a little along the way.
We can only begin to tell you about how glad our retirees are to have a one-stop-shopping experience that offers so many ways to keep busy, engaged, and active. We hope that you make the decision to join in on some of the fun. Read the monthly calendar to see what events are coming up, and then call to reserve your space. Remember that we are providing programs for more than 4,000 retirees in the New York City area, so space may be limited.
We have a special welcome gift for all 'newbie' retirees. Or, if you are an existing retiree, stop by the office just to say hello. We can't wait to greet you all.
Greetings to all 1180 retirees and welcome back! Now that all of the City of New York is returning to the new normal as of Nov. 1, you’re likely to be looking forward to coming down to our building and seeing the friendly faces of staff who’ll answer all of your most pressing benefit questions. However, don’t go gassing up your scooter yet because we might not be there. You see, the Retiree Division has changed since we last met. Let me get you caught up on the NEW Retiree Division.
All of the CWA Local 1180 offices have gone through a renovation process and the Retiree Division is now located upstairs on the third floor with the staff of the Security & Retiree Benefits Funds Office. Because of this change, unless otherwise noted, all events will take place at a location to be announced.
The best part of this move to the third floor is that we will be planning more borough meetings and special events that will make it easier for you to see us in person! Because of the need for social distancing and off-location events, we recommend you call the office for an appointment before coming. Otherwise, you might find we are at an outside event or may have other retirees scheduled before you and not have enough time to fully address your concerns.
We are also planning to resume newsletters with information about events and updates about joining events online. We will aim to get the mailing out days ahead of the email communication, but even with every effort made to balance the distribution of information, someone will get it first and someone will get it last. Please check our website at www.cwa1180.org for the most up-to-date information.
Additionally, we will continue to be available to 100% of the membership by hosting online meetings with dial-in numbers for members who are not on the computer. I remind you that we work in an environment that increasingly pushes for email communications, so update your email address if you have not already.
A lot of things changed since we last met in person, but the core mission of the Retiree Division has remained the same — provide the best service and benefit support for Local 1180 retirees.
The new Retiree Division has live, in-person group events, borough outreach, weekly live virtual benefit meetings, special events, and invited speakers from the Plans that provide your benefits. We hope you are as excited as we are! Welcome back. I can’t wait to see you all again!

NOTE: Even though the Local 1180 offices, including the Retiree Division, have reopened as of Nov. 1, it is still strongly suggested that you make an appointment rather than just dropping in. This will help us maintain social distancing and ensure the Retiree Division staff is actually in the building and not out at an onsite event.

Local 1180 Retiree Division History
In 1996, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to offer a new benefit to retirees that would assist them in transitioning from a worker to a retiree. The age wave was producing a new group of retirees that had shown a greater interest in remaining active. The Retiree Division was born that year and began offering recreational programming, workshops, educational classes all within a new center housed 97 Hudson Street, on the lower level of the building occupied by Local 1180. The Division continues to reach out to retired members and provide an opportunity that promotes their physical and emotional well-being as they remain active educationally, culturally, and socially. The Retiree Division engages retirees in activities that support a long and healthy retirement with dignity and respect.
